How To Burn A CD

Burning a CD with files from your computer using Nero Burning Rom

Step 1: Run the Nero Wizard

  1. Launch the Nero - Burning Rom software from Start menu - Programs. A wizard will start up. Click the “CD” radio button and click “Next”.

  2. Click the “Compile a new CD” radio button and click “Next”.

  3. Choose what kind of CD you’d like to burn: for a music CD to play in your CD player, choose “Audio CD”; for a CDROM containing computer files, select “Data CD”.

  4. Tell Nero if you are burning a fresh, empty CD (most common option – choose “Compile a new data-CD”) or burning more information on a CD-R that you’ve already used (choose “Continue an existing data-CD (multi-session)”.

  5. Open the CD Writer drive, place your CD-R in it, and close the drive. Read Nero’s instructions for compiling and burning your CD, and click “Finish”.

Step 2: Adding Files to your CD Layout

  1. When you’ve completed the wizard, you’ll see Nero’s CD Layout screen:

  2. Here, you can give your CD a name of 8 characters or less without spaces (e.g. Jean). You will see a File Browser on the right-hand side of the window where you can locate the files you want to burn on your CD. You can drag-and-drop files or folders into the CD Layout section of the window, on the left-hand side.

Step 3: Burning the CD

  1. When you’ve added all the files you want to burn to the CD Layout, click the “Burn CD” button on the toolbar. (Click in the CD Layout section of the window if the Burn button is grayed out.) This will launch Nero’s Burn CD Wizard.

  1. The ‘Burn’ radio button will be selected for you. You have the option of choosing the write speed if you like. It will automatically choose the highest writing speed, but if you find that you burner doesn’t accurately burn for you, try a lower writing speed – but note that it does take longer. Click 'Burn'.

  2. You will now see the process and progress of Nero testing (Nero calls it “simulation”) and burning the CD in a dialogue box similar to the one below.

  3. When the burn process is complete, You can save what you have burned if you would like to burn it again. If not, click ‘Discard’, and the CD-Writer drive will open automatically and you can remove your CD

Copying an Existing Audio or Data CD

  1. Launch the Nero - Burning Rom software from Start menu à Programs. A wizard will start up. Click the “Copy a CD” radio button and click “Next”.

  2. Place the CD you’d like to copy in the CD-ROM drive. Nero should detect your CDROM drive and display it in the “Source Drive” field on the wizard’s second screen. If it doesn’t, click the drop-down list and select your computers CDROM drive. Do not tick the “Fast copy (on-the-fly)” check box as it is unreliable. Click “Next”.

  3. Click the “Burn” button.

  4. You will now see the process and progress of Nero reading the source CD, testing (Nero calls it “simulation”) and burning the CD. When the burn process is complete, the CD-Writer drive will open automatically and you can remove your CD.
